Upright pianos, also known as vertical pianos, are a popular type of piano that has its strings and soundboard positioned vertically.

Vertical Orientation

They are called upright pianos because of their vertical orientation, as opposed to grand pianos that have a horizontal layout.

Here are some key features and characteristics of upright pianos:

Design: Upright pianos are compact and designed to be placed against a wall, conserving space compared to grand pianos. They come in various sizes, ranging from console pianos (the smallest) to studio and upright grand pianos (the largest). The height of an upright piano can vary between 36 to 60 inches (91 to 152 cm).
Sound and Tone: Upright pianos produce sound by using vertically arranged strings and a soundboard placed perpendicular to the keyboard. Due to their design, the sound projection of an upright piano is more limited compared to grand pianos. However, technological advancements have allowed manufacturers to improve the sound quality of upright pianos over the years.
Pedals: Upright pianos typically have two or three pedals. The most common configuration includes a sustain pedal (also called the damper pedal), which allows the pianist to sustain notes; a soft pedal (also called the una corda pedal), which shifts the entire action mechanism to the right, creating a softer tone; and a practice pedal (also called the mute pedal), which reduces the volume by placing a strip of felt between the hammers and strings.
Price Range: Upright pianos are generally more affordable than grand pianos. The price can vary significantly depending on the brand, size, condition, and age of the instrument. New upright pianos can range from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, while used ones can be found at lower prices.
Maintenance: Like all pianos, upright pianos require regular maintenance to keep them in optimal playing condition. This includes tuning, which should be done at least once or twice a year, as well as occasional regulation and voicing to ensure the piano's action and tone are balanced and responsive.

Upright pianos are popular choices for home use, practice studios, schools, and small performance venues where space is a consideration. They offer a more affordable and space-efficient alternative to grand pianos while still providing a rich musical experience.
